The Town of Marathon is warning people to stay away from giant hogweed, wild parsnip, and cow parsnip which have been noted at some wild areas within the municipality. These are invasive species which have been reported to the Ontario Invasive Species Centre.
The wildflowers can be found along trails and along the edges of parks and open spaces. However, sap in these plants can cause skin and eye irritation, which can lead to severe burning and blistering if exposed to the sun. Symptoms can take place within 48 hours and can even lead to painful blisters and scarring.
Parents are especially urged to keep their children and pets away from these plants.
